Taking a minute to share another mini-session from before Christmas. This was quite possibly the coldest session I have ever done. The wind was blowing and it was bitter. I can't even believe how well this little guy did!

Even though I was mostly on maternity leave this year for Christmas season, I did do a *few* sessions for some really loyal clients. I'm so excited that every one's Christmas cards have now been sent and I can start to share some of these sessions with you. I so enjoy what I do and all of the special families I get to work for, as well as the wonderful friends I have made through this little photography business. I consider it such a blessing that so many of my "clients" end up becoming good friends.

This lovely lady was kind enough to coordinate meals for me after Aeryn was born. What a wonderful blessing and a special friend.

For Halloween we had a house full of angels. Adalyn decided that's what she wanted to be and mommy decided that was a GREAT (read: easy) idea and all the girls were going to be angels this year!

Aeryn Ella - Austin Newborn Photographer

Introducing Aeryn Ella.... our lovely new baby girl. She will be three weeks old tomorrow.

I shared this picture on facebook, but realized that I forgot to come and share it here. Needless to say, things have been a little crazy around the Pope house. Believe it or not, Aeryn hasn't really contributed too much to the craziness. She is, so far, a very sweet, happy and content baby. We are thanking God for an easy baby #3. The craziness has come more from a shot reaction (for Adalyn) that caused a 105 degree fever and an outpatient ENT surgery for me. All since Aeryn was born. We have to keep it interesting!

I plan to come back and share a little more about Aeryn's birth in the future...if I ever have time. :) For now, enjoy this sweet smiling face.

The One Where I Almost Had A Baby - Austin Newborn Photographer

Dear Mallory, mother to this sweet baby girl, let me tell you what happened Friday after I left your house.... I had contractions 4 minutes apart all the way home. When I got home, I laid down and they slowed down to a whole 6-7 minutes apart.... they continued like that all afternoon until I called the hospital and they made me come in Friday night since they weren't stopping. A couple of hours and several tests later, it was determined that it was just false labor and I would not be having a baby and I was sent on my merry way to rest, rest, rest.

Contractions and false labor are really normal for me. I had contractions for months before both Adalyn and Aubrey were born - they aren't all that painful and I can obviously work through them (until I sit down in the car and realize they are 4 minutes apart. lol) So this was totally normal for me. I'm sure I will probably be in the hospital for a couple more false alarms before this baby comes too. (I went twice before Aubrey was born.) All of that to say, it is probably a good thing that this was my last session before little Pope #3 makes her appearance. :)

Aaaannnnnnd.... since I didn't have a baby - IT WAS TOTALLY WORTH IT.

These pictures make me want to sigh (a happy sigh). Such a sweet little baby and it was so fun to get to hold and snuggle her and think ahead to our little one on the way.

Christmas in July - Austin Family Photographer

As I shared recently, our family is expecting an addition sometime at the end of September or the beginning of October this year. This means that Dorean Pope Photography will not be able to schedule Christmas Portrait sessions this year, as I will be on maternity leave. I know it is EXTREMELY early and VERY warm to be thinking about Christmas. BUT, if you would like to schedule a family portrait session this year, in time for Christmas, please contact me ASAP. I am planning to continue working through July, but am unsure how much later in the year I will be offering sessions.

I am also planning to offer a couple of mini-sessions opportunities next month. These will be limited and scheduled on a first come first served basis. If you are interested in booking one of these sessions, please shoot me an e-mail and you will be the first to receive the details.

Such cuties and so much fun!! This was one of the windiest days (of a bunch of really windy days) that we've had recently. Thank goodness there were buildings for us to hide behind, otherwise we may have blown away. We had a lot of fun though and these two did great.

Last weekend, I got to hang out with Melissa of Oh Fiddlesticks! and some lovely little gals to do a commercial shoot for her new line, coming in July. It was HOT, HOT, HOT, as only Texas can be in early June. Luckily for us, our shoot included lots of super cute tank tops and pink lemonade!

This is just a tiny sneak peek of their new shirts. The full design has to stay under wraps until it is released in July. There will be more blog posts to come soon though, featuring some amazing props put together for us by Anna and Blue Paperie. As well as some shots of my sweet girls that got to participate in the session.

It was such a privilege... I was so thrilled when one of my best friends told me that her family wanted to gift their mother with a family portrait session for her birthday. I practically grew up with this family and so it is extra special to be able to capture them all together at this point in their lives. So fun.

Personally, I think it is a fabulous gift idea!! What mother doesn't love to have all of her kids and grandkids together in one place, taking the time to celebrate family? It's important!

I was fortunate to find a bluebonnet field this year. Even after I did spot it, the bluebonnets did not last long. They were already starting to fade a little by the time we did this session. It has just been SO dry!!

Little Tyler is a sweetie pie. He has such a fun and happy disposition. He is so easy to make giggle and grin and makes my job LOTS of fun!

The second oldest of 8 children. Susan is quiet and unassuming with beautiful green eyes that shimmer in the sunlight. She brought her two younger sisters along with her to get a picture of all of them together, which tells me that family is important to her. Took my camera with us into the back yard to capture play time yesterday. I try not to take my camera with me most of the time when we go out to play. When I have my camera, I find it hard to play with them because I am protecting the camera or focused on taking pictures of them playing. So most of the time, it doesn't come with me. Yesterday it did, and I'm glad.

Getting so big... she'll be 2 soon.

Very independent!

What To Wear: Senior Portraits - Austin Senior Portrait Photographer

Here are a couple examples of what you can wear for a Senior Portrait Session.

One great thing about a senior session is that we are a little more flexible and can visit several locations, mixing an urban look with some portraits in a field or at a park. I absolutely encourage bringing several outfits for the session. Expressing your personality is one of the most fun parts of a senior session, so I encourage you to dress in something that is comfortable and very much YOU! Of course, you also want to have a couple more traditional shots, so I recommend that you bring something a little dressy and a little more traditional for one of the shots as well.

As I mentioned in my previous post, I did a little photo shoot a while back with my good friend Jen of Oh Fiddlesticks!. Her little girl tagged along with us and I took a couple shots of her as we went. This was back in December, when I was up to my eyeballs in editing so I saved them to my computer and I hadn't gone back to look at them since. I pulled them out yesterday and was pleasantly surprised at what I found.

She is such a cutie and so spunky and fun as you can see in some of these photos.

In the middle of all the craziness of my busy season this year, I managed to get out with a good friend of mine to have her take a couple head shots of me. I KNEW that it was important to have your own picture on your blog and website, I had just never taken the time to make it happen. Well, one of the websites I read and gain a lot from did a whole blog post on WHY it is so important and I decided to stop putting it off and just find a way to make it happen!

I called up my friend, Jen, the artist behind the Oh Fiddlesticks! clothing line and asked her to lend her hands and creative eyes to me and my camera. She did a great job and the image below is the resulting head shot. It now has a permanent home at the top of this blog.

Thank you so much, Jen, for making this happen and for helping me out.

Story Time - Cedar Park Photographer

With all of the cold weather recently, I have been using up my bag of tricks for indoor activities with the kids. I thought some of you might be running out of ideas as well, so I'm going to share one of my favorite activities with you, maybe it will help you out!

For any of you who live up this way, I love to take the kids to story time at the Cedar Park Public Library. I started going when Adalyn was about 6 months old and was just really impressed with the program. They have story time for all ages and Miss Jane, the librarian who facilitates story time, does an excellent job! The only draw back is that it is so wonderful that it can be a little crowded, but, especially during the winter when you are tired of being cooped up inside, it is still worth it in my opinion.

And because every post is better with a picture... I will share a couple of point and shoot pictures from 2008 of Adalyn at story time and "reading" a book.

A little Christmas cheer from our house to yours!

I had a few spare moments tonight while the rest of the family was watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation and I was able to get in some shots with my "real" camera of our Christmas decorations. Most years I am running behind and life is crazy and the only pictures I ever get are with my little point and shoot camera. I'm not sure what's different this year, but this week has been...relaxed. It is wonderful to step back and enjoy my family and this season.

I met this lovely family at Fisherman's Park in Bastrop, Texas. We had originally planned a morning session, but decided to switch to an evening session at the last minute to try to avoid a chilly morning. I'm so glad we did! The weather cooperated with us and we got some really lovely evening light.

PS - I am starting to like Bastrop more and more every time I visit the little downtown area. Really cute shops, great places to eat, a pharmacy with a REAL ice cream counter and genuine small town feel.

I was so excited today to see the completion of a project that I started earlier this summer. A little sneak peek for this brave mama. Her little girl sounds a lot like my Aubrey. Bold, fearless, and into everything. You can't tell by looking at her pictures, but she broke her little nose the week before our session. That didn't slow her down, and it didn't stop us from having our session either! We were just EXTRA careful with her. We had to keep her from diving off of steps and running... which I hear is what the doctor ordered for the next four weeks. Good luck, Mama!!

It was a rather different experience for me, since I am used to working with tiny tots running around in every direction and looking anywhere but at the camera. A Mini & A New Favorite Place - Austin Family and Child Portrait Photographer

We did this mini-session at a restaurant called Dahlia Cafe in Liberty Hill, Texas and followed it up with a great country cooked dinner. I had never been to Dahlia's before, but I have to say I definitely plan to go back. They have a beautiful outdoor seating area with picnic tables and vintage patio sets. There are giant oak trees and a playground for the kids. The food was really tasty. If you live up on the north side, I recommend giving it a try! They have live music on Saturday night.

What I Love About What I Do - Austin Family Photographer

This session reminded me of what I LOVE about this little job that I do. When I can look through the viewfinder of my camera and capture a child's personality - it makes me happy. To take a picture of who they are, not just what they look like right now. A picture of their joy and delight or their tentative nature. I love it! I love seeing who they are and capturing a little piece of that for their family.

This family is very special to me, and it was a blast to spend time with these very neat kiddos.

So excited to share these images.

I can't believe I never blogged them - they went straight to my facebook fan page for a contest and never made it here. I had the amazing opportunity to work with my great friends at Oh Fiddlesticks! to do a photo shoot for their line of children's clothes. They held a model search on their facebook fan page and then fully styled and designed this session. It was a whirlwind of outfit and prop changes all in about an hour and a half and so, so much fun!! The kids were great to work with and I'm in love with these images. I'm also in love with their shirts!! There will be a part two to this post, because this doesn't even cover all of it!!

I love it when clients suggest a new loction for a session. It is fun to get out of my "comfort zone" and explore someplace new. This family chose to have their session at Jones Brothers Park in Jonestown, Texas. Who knew that there was such a nice park, right on the lake just 15 minutes from my house. I loved it and will definitely be taking the girls there to play soon. I hear it is even prettier there at sunset! Thanks for the great idea, you guys!

Family Reunion at the Hyatt Lost Pines - Austin Family Photographer

Family, Fun, and Feet - Austin Family Photographer

Such a fun family session!! These guys were up for anything and hiked around the park with me. We even went down to the recently flooded creek to throw rocks and play. I think their little guy enjoyed it!

The last shot is my absolute favorite. If you've been around here for a while you know there is nothing I like more than a good shot of some baby feet! This little guy was so cute the way he sat on my stool and crossed his legs at the ankles. I love the beautiful color of the grass mixed with the color of his jeans in this shot and that his mama will always be able to look at this picture and remember his chubby little one year old feet.

I'm getting excited about all of the fall family sessions I've got coming up. I've still got some spaces available for my holiday mini-sessions - e-mail me if you are interested. To help everyone get ready for their sessions - I thought I would post a couple more examples of what to wear to really make your family pictures stand out.

I don't at all expect you to go out and buy these outfits, but as you look at them you can get an idea of how to plan what to wear for your session.

Here are a couple of tips to think about when picking your family's wardrobe for our session -

1. Start by picking a color palette. Pick a neutral color that you like - blue, brown, gray etc... and then pick a couple of accent colors to go with your neutral.

2. Don't be afraid of a little pattern. You will notice that with each of these examples, there was some pattern added - not everyone was wearing a solid color. Adding a little bit of pattern will make your outfits more interesting.

3. Accessorize!! Add a jacket, add a tie (for your little man), add a headband (for your daughter), and a bracelet (for mom).

4. Have fun with it!!

Holiday Mini-Sessions - Austin Family Photographer

As I write this, there are officially 98 days, 12 hours, and 52 minutes left until Christmas. Did you know you can google and find out EXACTLY how much time is left until Christmas? Pretty Cool.

So now that I have you thinking about Christmas, here is some information about my holiday mini-sessions for this year. I have two events currently planned (with the possibility to add a day in San Antonio.)

I'm really excited about our locations this year. I think they will allow me to do both urban/vintage looking shots as well more natural and green settings as well. It's going to be fun!!

Smiles & Weeping Willows - Austin Family Photographer

This session was done at one of my new favorite locations!!

I just LOVE weeping willow trees. They are beautiful and make for excellent backgrounds.

We were blessed with some "cooler" weather Sunday evening, meaning it wasn't still 100 degrees at 7:00. This little guy was much more interested in NOT smiling for me than smiling. Which is fine with me, I love the serious face shots too. I think they give you a glimpse of the child's personality. However, me and my bag of tricks DID prevail and I managed to catch his beautiful smile as well.

Four things about me...

1. I ordered FOUR pairs of shoes for my brother's upcoming wedding before I finally picked up THE ONES tonight. They are the correct size and I will not kill myself trying to walk down the aisle in them (I can't wear real heels to save my life.) Some might say I have a little bit of denial about my shoe size, I just say not all shoes are made the same so, sometimes the smaller ones fit me. :)

2. I made mystery chicken for dinner tonight. No recipe, I just made it up as I went. It actually turned out half way decent. BUT, the thing that was really good was the salsa salad kit from Costco. I am not a huge fan of salad, but THAT salad is really good.

3. I'm a big advocate of two things. Costco and USAA (the bank).

- I LOVE Costco. Love that you can return pretty much anything there up to two years after you bought it and they will just give you your $$, no questions asked. Tim (my husband) exchanged sunglasses today. He's had them for several months and the finish was peeling. ZERO hassle. Love it!

- I love USAA because I can deposit a check by taking a picture of it with my iPhone. So cool and easy. (Oh yeah, I also love my iPhone.) USAA also has really good customer service which I am a stickler about since I worked in customer service for so long.

4. I miss my sister who lives in Florida. She had a baby in April and I haven't met him yet. He (I mean THEY - haha) will be here in less than a month and I'm really excited!

And there you have it, four random things about me. Now that I have shared, I am off to bed. Goodnight!

I absolutely LOVE this first shot. It is somewhat of an outtake. They were sitting on my blanket on the grass and ended up all falling backward. The giggles that resulted were priceless and this picture ended up being one of my favorites.

I posted a couple of these on my facebook fan page a little while back. Now I am coming back to blog all of my favorites from the session because I know their mama is dying to see them! :)

You see a lot of this family around here and I LOVE it!! At the start of this year, they bought a package from me that includes a birthday session for each of their kids as well as a family session at the end of the year, right before Christmas. It is a great way for them to document their children's growth and their family life throughout the year. Of course, even though each session is dedicated to one specific child, I still make sure that I get some great shots of the family and siblings to include as well.

What Should I Wear? - Austin Portrait Photographer

One of the most common questions I'm asked when it comes to a portrait session has to do with clothing. I completely understand that choosing your outfit for pictures can be really difficult. So I thought I would share a couple of things I want everyone to know when choosing their outfits as well as a couple of sample wardrobes to give you some ideas.

FIRST - Color is OKAY. It is not the enemy. Color, texture, and patterns can add so much depth to a portrait. Don't be afraid of them.

SECOND - DO avoid very bright/neon colored clothing. These clothes can affect the tone of your skin in the pictures and should be avoided. I'm not talking about avoiding blue, plum purple, or light pink etc. I am talking about avoiding bright orange, bright red, neon green.... you get the picture.

THIRD - Everyone doesn't have to match. As you can see in the examples below, the colors are coordinated; but none of the outfits match completely. This can add a lot of depth to you portrait as well.

FOURTH - The MOST IMPORTANT THING is that you be comfortable and LIKE the clothes that you wear. You are the one who is going to be looking at this picture for years to come. This is your memory, so pick something that you will enjoy.

Precious Kiddos - Austin Child & Family Photographer

I met up with this family on Sunday morning, bright and early. They have two beautiful little girls and wanted to get some baby pictures done of their youngest, in addition to capturing their family at this time.

I SO enjoy what I do. As I go through all of the pictures from a session and pick out favorites to edit, I think about how these parents will be able to look back in 25 years and remember their children's faces and expressions at this age. This portrait session will help them to remember these precious, chubby cheeks and sparkling eyes. The innocence of youth. It is a very special thing.

My Special Project - Austin Photographer

I'm happy to finally sit down and tell you about my new project. A couple months ago, while reading through photography forums, I stumbled on a thread where someone mentioned donating their time and talent to create a calendar for charity. I loved the idea! I started thinking about what that would look like for me and what charity I would like to support. The natural choice for me and the first idea that popped into my head was to create a calendar for Pregnancy Resource Centers. First of all because I LOVE photographing babies, kids, and families and second, because I felt compelled to support their work, but hadn't known where to start.

Over the next couple of months, I felt like God really directed my steps and brought me into contact with an amazing woman named Lori. She is the director for the Austin Pregnancy Resource Center. I decided to step outside of my comfort zone and pitch her my idea. She told me they had thought about doing a calendar before, but had never taken the steps to put one together. She was in!! Her only request was that we photograph families that had come through their center. I loved that idea!

A couple of weekends ago, we set up a marathon of mini-sessions to get started on our calendar. Today you get to see the first sneak peek from those sessions with more to follow.

Our goal is to have the calendar completed in time for the center's Fall Extravaganza on September 28th. The event will be held at the Ut Alumni Center and Pam Tebow will be the guest speaker. If you are interested in attending, check out APRC's website for more information.

As I mentioned in my last post, our niece Katie visited recently. When she got here, I told her I wanted to do some portraits of her while she was here. Of course, the night before her last day with us I realized I hadn't taken her pictures yet. Ugh. So Katie was a good sport and we made sure that we got a mini-session in on her last day here. She is a beautiful girl, inside and out! Adalyn LOVES her and misses her a lot.

Wow, it's been an interesting couple of weeks. Sorry for the silence around here. My old hard drive decided to give out on me, so I have been in the process of getting a new one and dealing with all of the headache that involves. Things are a little delayed around here as a result, but I hope to get back on track soon. Many thanks to anyone waiting for a sneak peek or proofs for your patience!!

I have also been busy with family the last couple of weeks. We had two family reunions and my niece came to stay with us for two weeks. Of course I got her in front of my camera before I sent her home, so I will have that blog post coming up soon. We have all enjoyed the family time, but Adalyn has been thoroughly enjoying herself. All of her aunts, uncles, and cousins shower her with attention and she just LOVES it!

As a little teaser, I will tell you that I have a new project that I'm working on.

I am SUPER excited about it and can't wait to share some pics.

Fellowship Bible Church VBS Program - Austin Photographer

This past week our church, Fellowship Bible Church, had their Vacation Bible School (VBS) program. The youngest children that can attend VBS are 3 years old, so Adalyn wasn't able to attend this year. I can't wait until next year when she will be able to go - this stuff is right up her alley. She will love it.

I attended the family fun night at the end of the week where all of the kids got to show off the songs and verses they had learned throughout the week. I snapped a few shots that I thought I would share with you. I'm sure they were all totally worn out, but it looks like they had a lot of fun!

My Favorite Teen Picture - Austin Senior Photographer

This week on I Heart Faces the theme is teens. Whenever I think about the senior portraits and teen pictures I've taken, there is one that sticks out in my mind as my favorite. It is a shot I took of my brother just a couple of months after I got my first serious digital camera. It isn't perfect, but I love that I captured him at this stage - he looks so much like my mom and my dad in this picture. I am thankful to have this memory cemented in "film" so that I wont ever forget and I can show his kids someday. He was a good kid back then and he's a great man now. He appeared pretty recently on my blog. Because he's GETTING MARRIED!! Crazy how time flies. :)

We are going to put a new spin on the portrait playdate session. I am going to host a playdate for my clients and give you the opportunity to have your kiddos pictures taken in their 4th of July outfits. If you are like me, you will buy a cute little red, white, and blue outfit for your little ones - they'll wear it once - and then it will disappear into the back of the closet. So, what do you say? Hi friends! Sorry it has been so quiet around here lately. The last week was a busy one for me. We celebrated both my birthday and my anniversary. There was a camping trip, a girls night out, and a boating excursion. We ate ALLLLLLL kinds of yummy food. I got many, many fun presents - including a new camera. (YIPEE!!) It was a really fun week of celebration. I am so thankful - so very thankful.

So in the mean time, this little pumpkin who made her last appearance on my blog HERE, was busy celebrating her first week of life. If she doesn't look like a newborn, it's because she surprised everyone and came in weighing a solid 10 lbs 1 oz. She is absolutely precious and so very loved by her big brothers (as well as mom and dad of course).

You know I LOVE baby toes!! :) I hear these toes bear a striking resemblance to someone else's...
